A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
