The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
