Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
