Sheffield Wednesday Faces Serious Challenges, States New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - football oversight chief the regulator's chair

The Championship club's current difficulties represent a a "serious issue" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to examine team situations in comparable cases, its new chair the official has declared.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, expressed "sympathy" towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four supporter groups connected to the Championship side recently.

The team have been struggling on and off the field in 2025, with the club delaying salary disbursements on several different times, including in September.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a major challenge for the sport," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the historic institutions for English football and in recent days we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and dealt with."

Financial Struggles and Proprietorship Status

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at the stadium, but he has not been able to secure a deal with prospective buyers.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year caused limitations by the football authorities in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the subsequent signing windows, although that restriction was lifted in late summer.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where people are committed to a local institution that has been part of their lives in many cases.

"I completely understand the club's situation, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the followers."

Questioned about whether the authority might compel an owner to sell a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we gather the evidence and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to work with them.

"Our least desirable course of action is begin intervening in an individual club, an specific proprietor, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"But the truth is, when you review the record of the game, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, few in number, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with representatives from 110 clubs to lay out the remit of the regulator on Wednesday and maintained it represented a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "significant participation" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear swiftly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we need to continue the progress.

"Considerable investment entering the sport and has come into football for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will keep flowing into the sport, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on risk and of course, of the immediate future."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the prosperity and expansion as an economic entity of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of England. But concurrently, if you engage with division representatives after today's meeting, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, indeed, they have been telling us in private they have a significant confidence."

Political Connections

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he disclosed making donations to the Labour Party in recent years.

The official donated money to government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my past party membership [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the select committee approved my appointment," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any form of political activity."
