Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
